IELTS is a widely recognized test used to assess English language proficiency, and many Canadian universities require international students to take it before they can apply for admission.

Is It Possible To Study In Canada Without IELTS?
Canadian universities utilise diverse methods to evaluate the English language proficiency of applicants for admission.
Nonetheless, numerous universities do not mandate the submission of IELTS scores if the applicant meets the alternative language proficiency requirements specified by the institution.
Many Canadian universities require applicants to provide a Letter of Recommendation (LOR) from one of their previous academic institutions.
Moreover, certain foreign students from specific nationalities are exempt from providing English language proficiency scores. Some Canadian academic institutions also accept alternative English language proficiency tests besides IELTS that students can submit during the admission process.

University of Winnipeg
When applying to the University of Winnipeg, students must demonstrate their English language proficiency, but this requirement does not solely apply to IELTS scores.
International students who are unable to provide IELTS scores have several alternative options available to them. These include the Duolingo English Test, Cambridge Assessment English, CanTest, Canadian Academic English Language Assessment, Pearson Test of English, and the Academic English Programme for University and College Entrance.
Additionally, the University of Winnipeg offers an English Language Programme designed to assist students in developing their English proficiency skills to meet their language needs.
Students can choose to complete this program on a full-time or part-time basis, which will then qualify them for admission into a course offered by the university.
Memorial University of Newfoundland
One of the largest universities in Canada, the Memorial University of Newfoundland offers over 300 courses across various fields, including economics, computer science, international business, and engineering.
The university waives the English language proficiency requirement for international students who have completed high school or post-secondary education in English in certain countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and some Caribbean countries.
The institution also accepts alternative English language proficiency results from TOEFL and CAEL. However, if students do not meet the minimum scores required for these tests, they can enroll in the Intensive English Program offered by the university. Upon completion of the program, students will be accepted into the university.
Brock University
Brock University offers undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields. The institution offers many alternatives for IELTS.
Other than IELTS, the university accepts TOEFL, PTE, CAEL Assessment (Canadian assessment of English language), MELAB, and YELT scores.
It offers the Intensive English Language Program (IELP) for those who can’t provide English language proficiency scores.
Moreover, the university accepts international students without IELTS if they have studied in an English-speaking country for at least three years.
University of Saskatchewan
According to the QS World University Rankings 2023, the University of Saskatchewan has been ranked as the 17th best university in Canada.
With over 130 programs offered through 13 constituent colleges, six affiliated colleges, and three graduate schools, international students are not required to provide IELTS scores at this institution. Instead, they can demonstrate their English language proficiency through TOEFL, CanTest, Duolingo English Test (DET), and CAEL Assessment.
In cases where none of the previously mentioned requirements are met, students can still gain admission by first completing the English for Academic Purposes program offered by the University’s Language Centre.
Concordia University
Concordia University, which has held the top spot as North America’s number one university for two consecutive years, does not mandate that international students take the IELTS exam.
However, applicants must fulfill the minimum English language proficiency criteria for admission, which can be demonstrated through various means such as TOEFL, DET, CAEL, CAE, CPE, and PTE. If an applicant has already completed the Quebec Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC), they may be exempted from submitting an IELTS score.
If none of these apply to the applicant, Concordia University offers an Intensive English Language Programme (IEP). Upon obtaining a final grade of 70% or more in the IEP’s Advanced Two Level, the applicant will meet Concordia University’s English language proficiency standards.
Cambrian College
Cambrian College, like Concordia University, does not mandate that international students take the IELTS exam. It is recognized as one of the top universities in Northern Ontario and is also among the most economical for international students.
In lieu of IELTS, the university recognizes other English proficiency exams, such as TOEFL, PTE, and Duolingo.
Additionally, international students have the option of enrolling in the English for Academic Purposes Programme (EAPP). Upon completion of the four to 10-month course, students will be admitted into a programme.
Seneca College
Seneca College offers pathways for international students to apply and study without requiring them to take the IELTS exam.
One way to do so is through the English Language Pathway Program (ELPP). The ELPP provides students with intensive English language courses to improve their language proficiency.
Another way is by taking one of the various English language proficiency tests accepted by Seneca College. These tests include TOEFL, CAEL, PTE, and the Duolingo English Test.
International students who have completed an academic program from an English-speaking institution may also be exempted from taking the IELTS exam. However, applicants must provide official documentation to verify their eligibility for exemption.
Carleton University
Carleton University provides several alternatives for international students who do not wish to take the IELTS exam. The first option is to complete an English language program from a recognized institution.
Students must provide proof of completion and must have passed the program’s language proficiency requirement. This option helps students develop their language skills and improve their chances of being accepted into Carleton University.
Another alternative is for students to complete Carleton University’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program. The ESL program is designed to improve international students’ language proficiency to meet Carleton University’s language requirements.
Carleton University accepts several other English language proficiency tests in place of the IELTS exam. These tests include TOEFL, CAEL, and PTE Academic. Students must attain the required minimum scores to be eligible for admission.
